History of the VRI

The VRI celebrated its 100th year during 2010. Formed in 1910, the Victorian Railways Institute was the educational and social arm for railway employees. From the start the VRI was based at Flinders Street Station and had a range of services provided to members, both in education and social clubs. The famous Ballroom, on the third floor of the railway building is still spoken about with much nostalgia from those who used to attend it. Like the Ballroom, the VRI has had to make changes to accommodate itself in the 21st century.

The VRI is open to all people to join and is part of the leisure services industry. The pages on this site will show you how up to date our services and products are and why joining the VRI can be of benefit to you.
